While in India the cuckoo is sacred to Kamadeva (the god of desire) and in Japan it represents unrequited love, the cuckoo's deceptive habit of laying eggs in other birds' nests reveals its darker side. This traditional English folk song is full of complex symbolism that weaves a narrative of love, betrayal, and the passage of time.
